The United States of America has come a long way since the time of Super Sizing. It seems that everyone now is focused on maintaining good health and ensuring proper portion control. All of the restaurants have the caloric content for your fries and double cheeseburger listed to make sure you know you are about to scarf your entire daily allotment in one sitting. There are attempts at legislation to ensure we don’t over indulge on sugary beverages. We are preached to about the evils of artificial sweeteners, high fructose corn syrup and trans-fats. All of this national attention focused on ensuring we don’t overindulge on the these things that are unhealthy and bad for us and yet we have totally abandoned portion control when it comes to other vices.
This country has far exceeded its recommended daily allowance of partisan politics. Politics in and of itself isn’t going to kill us, however, when we allow it to dominate our culture and take over our sensibilities it may come awfully close. We have overstuffed ourselves with one-sided beliefs, become obese with hatred and contempt to the point our nation is being ripped apart splitting at the seams. We have gotten to the point where it has become commonplace and acceptable to hate each other, simply for having different ideas. We can’t simply agree to disagree and go on with out lives anymore, we have gotten to the point where people must agree with our point of view or be classified as the enemy out to destroy our way of life.
It’s like the country has become that crazy health nut friend we all have, who reads about the ails of gluten, trans-fats, high fructose corn syrup, and starches and tries to convince you that you are going to die an early miserable death unless you abandon all of the toxic waste you are ingesting and never touch it again. The political parties have likewise been polarized to the point where they believe the opposition is that toxic death dealing substance that must be avoided at all costs. We have forgotten that a little soda every now and then, or having a hamburger isn’t going to harm anything so long as we throw in a salad or baked chicken and keep a balanced diet overall.
Yet there is no balance in our country, it is all or nothing. An entire industry has emerged with biased so called reporters on each side spewing hate and half truths about the other party. It has become acceptable and common place to lie and demean people as long as it is done in the name of politics, after all, they knew what they were getting into. There is no filter, no shame, no respect, only unsympathetic spiteful attacks against the opposition. It is no wonder, there is never a decent candidate for President. Who in their right mind would want to subject themselves to such dissection?
I don’t have the answer, I don’t know how to fix the situation, all I know is that this country needs to focus on portion control when it comes to politics. We need to work toward a balanced diet from all sides, trim back the animosity, and live up to the name “United” States of America.
